Province extends CARES program for two years

EDMONTON – The provincial government has announced an economic development grant program will continue for two more years.

The Community and Regional Economic Support (CARES) Program has been extended for another two years. The program provides grants to communities to help create jobs and diversify their economies.

“We launched the CARES program two years ago so local leaders could build on their regional strengths and create new jobs as we work together to build an economic recovery that lasts,” said Deron Bilous, Minister of Economic Development and Trade, in a news release. “By extending the program, we will continue to help communities take on projects they might not have been able to alone.”

The program pays for locally developed projects which promote long-term economic growth. It typically funds projects that communities and municipalities could not necessarily fund on their own.

In southeast Alberta, CARES has recently provided funding for the college’s Microgrid program, and funded an entrepreneurship incubator program in Brooks.

More than 170 initiatives have been funded through the program since 2016. The next intake for the program opens June 1 and runs until June 30. More information about CARES can be found here.
