MEDICINE HAT, AB — Health Minister Sarah Hoffman said the Alberta government is looking at expanding abortion services and it may include Medicine Hat.

Right now, surgical abortions are performed in Calgary and Edmonton.

Hoffman said there have been discussions with Alberta Health Services to expand the service into regional hospitals.

It’s part of the conversation around Bill 9, which would protect women getting an abortion from protesters at clinics.

Hoffman said it’s important that women have access to these services and that they’re offered closer to home.

“I think that this is a very personal decision. We’ve had women reach out to us and say, you know, if it was available at some of the regional hospitals, a little bit closer to home, it would make life a little bit easier,” she said, over the phone near Calgary. “Regional hospitals include Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Red Deer, Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray. These are hubs and they’re closer to home.”
