County of 40 Mile says flood situation improving

BOW ISLAND, AB — The County of 40 Mile is feeling cautiously optimistic Tuesday afternoon regarding the overland flooding situation in their region.

The county, along with St. Mary’s River Irrigation District, has been working since the weekend to clear ditches, drains and the 40 Mile Reservoir to alleviate the effects of flooding.

More than 20 backhoes have been working on the reservoir, removing ice jams, and dropping the water approximately three feet on Tuesday.

“Most of the over road flooding has now stopped,” said Reeve Steve Wikkerink over the phone Tuesday afternoon. “We had a cool enough night and morning that the majority of our culverts have caught up.

“We think that our culverts from here moving forward should be able to keep up, but in places, there’s still quite a bit of snow to come, so we’re a little bit cautious. But, we’re definitely going the right direction and things are looking a lot better.”

Wikkerink says the county is keeping an eye on areas near Foremost for possible flooding. Warm temperatures are in the forecast for the county this weekend, leading to concerns of more overland flooding.

“They still have a lot of snow, the really haven’t had their big run yet, so we’re still watching that area very closely, but hopefully the area by 40 Mile Dam, hopefully there we’re past the worst,” he said.

More than 30 roads still remain closed as a precaution due to damage following the flooding, says Wikkerink. A full list is below.

Wikkerink says the state of local emergency will likely remain in effect until the weekend.
