EDMONTON, AB – The province has provided more details about a new fund aimed at increasing tourism in the province.

The province announced the Tourism Growth Innovation Fund (TGIF) in the 2018 Budget. The fund will provide $1 million to help expand tourism offerings in Alberta, with a focus on winter and shoulder-season tourism development, rural projects and Indigenous cultural experiences.

“With more than 30 million people visiting the province each year, Alberta’s tourism industry is a vital contributor to our economy,” said Ricardo Miranda, Minister of Culture and Tourism, in a news release. “Tourism creates jobs, diversifies our economy and makes lives better for Albertans. TGIF is another resource to help the industry grow and prosper.

“This new fund will help communities and non-profit organizations tap into their ability to deliver the kinds of attractions and innovative experiences that travellers are seeking.”

The fund offers matching grants up to $75,000 for projects. Funding priority will go to projects that help grow tourism in communities beyond Calgary, Edmonton and mountain parks. Applications will be accepted twice each fiscal year. The first intake runs April 1 to 30, with a second intake set for October.

Alberta has earmarked $56.4 million for the fiscal year in Budget 2018 for the Ministry of Tourism.
