ALERT seizes suspected carfentanil in Claresholm

CLARESHOLM, AB —The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team has arrested and charged a Lethbridge woman after suspected carfentanil was seized in Claresholm.

Samantha Hattersley, 27, was arrested on Wednesday by ALERT’s Lethbridge organized crime and gang team outside of a business in Claresholm. During the arrest, a total of 114.5 grams of powder, which officers suspect contains carfentanil, was seized.

Carfentanil is an opioid that is 100 times more potent than fentanyl, and ALERT says its the first time they have seized a large amount of the suspected drug in the Lethbridge area.

“This is an extremely dangerous drug; even a tiny amount can be lethal,” says Staff Sgt. Jason Walper of ALERT Lethbridge. “People need to be aware that it is present here and the damage it can do to the community.”

Investigators also seized a small amount of another unknown powder, as well as a set of brass knuckles.. The total estimated value of the seized drugs is $45,800.

The seized powder has been sent to a laboratory for testing to determine its exact contents.

Hattersley is charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon, knowingly possessing a prohibited weapon, and carrying a concealed weapon.
