DUNMORE, AB — Cypress County council have approved funding for a scholarship in memory of a firefighter that passed away in the line of duty last year.

Councillors voted to match donations for the James Hargrave Scholarship during its meeting on Tuesday.

So far, Cypress County Emergency Services have raised $10,684 for the scholarship. According to the council package, “an organization, that wishes to remain anonymous at this time, has pledged to donate a significant amount of funds towards the scholarship further.”

Cypress County Emergency Services has also been in contact with Lakeland College in Vermilion regarding the administration and most valuable use of the scholarship.

Hargrave died on Oct. 17 while battling a grass fire in Hilda that had spread into Saskatchewan. He was 34 years old.

James’ wife Elizabeth issued a statement following the passing of the motion in council Tuesday.

“It is an honour for James to be recognized as a kind, giving, compassionate human being,” the statement reads. “I also hope and pray that people can learn from this tragedy.”

She adds, “A lasting legacy for James would be for people to recognize the danger firefighters are placed in, when others ignore the warnings of professionals and refuse to acknowledge the risk of life or death situations.”
