EDMONTON — The provincial government says the annual Open Farms Days program had its most successful year this summer.

In the fifth year of the program, the province recorded an increase in the number of farms and ranches participating, the number of people visiting farms and the number of on farm sales during the two-day event in August.

This year, 101 farms participated across the province, up from 92 in 2016. Total farm visits were up 13 per cent in 2017, from 17,804 the year before to 20,129 people this summer.

Farms also reported $146,121 in on-farm sales on Aug. 19 and 20, up from $134,280 the year before.

“The success of Open Farm Days is due in large part to the hard work of our farmers and ranchers who produce world-class products that are a source of pride for our province,” said Oneil Carlier, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry , in a statement. “The strong support of Albertans for this event that showcases the incredible potential of our sector in diversifying our economy has been truly remarkable.”

Open Farm Days is held every year in August.
