Rattlers women’s soccer team dominates in season opener

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A dominant performance for the Medicine Hat College Rattlers’ women’s soccer team on Saturday, as they opened their season with a statement against Lakeland College.

Midfielder Jordyn Bell scored the opening goal of the season for the Rattlers, scoring from the top of the box in just the third minute to put Medicine Hat up 1-0.

Just 12 minutes later, Bell fed the ball to fellow midfielder Francesca Schottner who scored her first of the campaign off the post and in to make it a 2-0 score.

In the 29th minute, Jadyn Fode extended Medicine Hat’s lead to 3-0 and give the home side all the momentum heading into half-time.

After the opening 45 minutes of play, the Ratters were outshooting the Rustlers by a 10-1 margin.

It stayed a 3-0 game until late in the second half, when forward Rachel Dorais put one away on a breakaway to give Medicine Hat a 4-0 advantage in the 87th minute.

Shortly after, midfielder Daragh O’Fuarthain added an unassisted marker to put the Rattlers ahead for good by a 5-0 final score.

Rattlers goalkeeper Kassidy Suberlak had a very quiet afternoon between the posts, stopping the lone shot that came her way in the first half.

As for the Rattlers’ men’s soccer team, a much more defensive matchup against the Rustlers.

Medicine Hat outshot Lakeland by a 10-5 count on Saturday, but both teams settled for a 0-0 draw in their opening match.

Netminder Devin Simon stopped all five shots he faced for the Rattlers, while Jared Ursulan led the way with three shots on net.

It’s back at home for the Rattlers on Sunday afternoon, as they welcome the Red Deer College Kings and Queens to town.

Game time for the women’s match is set for 12:00 pm, while the men take the field at 2:00 pm.
