MEDICINE HAT, AB — A donation of school supplies is now allowing several more children to be outfitted for back to school.

Medicine Hat MLA Bob Wanner, along with representatives from Telus, handed out 10 backpacks filled with school supplies to Saamis Immigration on Thursday.

The backpacks were handed out as part of the Kits for kids initiative from Telus, which guarantees 10 backpacks for all 87 constituencies in the province.

Wanner says he chose Saamis Immigration to receive the backpacks due to the challenges new Canadian families face during the school year.

“I wish we’d had enough for all of the children in our community, but there are particular challenges that young, new Canadian families are having,” said Wanner.

“It may be their first time in school, maybe they’re uneasy about the language, the customs, the culture, and we just saw this as an opportunity through a community agency, that already has a very healthy network in the province to give it to Saamis Immigration, allow them to distribute it to those who they think will benefit the most, and it helps these kids come to school with supplies and a new sense of self confidence about the future.”

Saamis Immigration was thankful for the donation, and the kids will put the supplies to good use.
