City and Bylaw ask Medicine Hat residents to be aware of street sweepers

MEDICINE HAT, AB – After the numerous snowfalls we had this winter in the city, gravel was put down to keep drivers safe on the roads.

Now that spring has sprung, it’s time to clean up that gravel.

Parked vehicles can become an issue when it comes to street sweeping, as people don’t always pay attention to the no parking signs that are posted.

Craig Maunder, operations engineer with the City of Medicine Hat, says that being concious and aware of what is going on and when your zone is being swept is the key to a smooth process.

“So just being conscious of our crews moving around. Not only the heavy equipment and trucks but we will provide that opportunity to move your vehicle,” he said. “It gets our guys to be more efficient as well as it makes sure that we are good neighbours.”

Heather Trail, supervisor of Bylaw Enforcement with the Medicine Hat Police Service says that after ample warning, if the street sweeper comes by and your vehicle is not moved, you could be ticketed.

While some cities have made the choice to ticket the vehicles that don’t comply to the rules, our city says that towing can get too costly.

Keeping an eye on social media and the city’s website can be a handy tool when it comes to knowing when your residential zone will be swept.

Last year the city ticketed a total of 430 vehicles, which was a 20 per cent decrease from the previous year.

The city has started sweeping main roads and hills across the city, will begin school zones this Easter weekend, and will head into the residential areas on April 24th.
