Trial date set for man accused of sexual assault at hotel pool in Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE – A new trial date has been set for a Calgary man, accused of sexually assaulting an adult and two minors at a Lethbridge hotel.

Wijdan Yasir faces three counts of sexual assault and two of sexual contact with a minor, in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred on April 16, 2016.

That day, Lethbridge Police were called to a hotel in the 2300 block of Mayor Magrath Drive South, after receiving a complaint that a woman and two girls were inappropriately touched at the hotel swimming pool. Police located the male at the hotel, and he was taken into custody without incident.

The case progressed relatively quickly, with Yasir entering a not guilty plea just one month later, with a trial date set for February of 2017. That trial had to be abandoned though, when a scheduling error on the part of the defence, caused neither Yasir or his lawyer to appear in court for a hearing in January, prompting the court to issue an arrest warrant. The warrant was vacated after the defence explained the situation.
