Hockey Alberta says discussions continue about proposed merger

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Hockey Alberta says a merger between hockey leagues in Medicine Hat and Lethbridge is only one option on the table at tonight’s meeting.

On Tuesday, news broke saying Hockey Alberta was considering a merger between the Southeast Athletic Club (SEAC) Tigers and Lethbridge Minor Hockey.

Brad Lyon, senior communications manager, says Hockey Alberta is doing a full evaluation of the two leagues, and one of the proposals brought up was combining SEAC and Lethbridge into one zone to increase competitiveness.

He says discussions are ongoing, and he encourages hockey parents and league officials to bring forward their concerns.

“Ideally, the committee, in consultation with the two minor hockey associations, will come up with a decision that is agreed to by all, and is supported by all, so that ultimately, the participants, the players benefit and get the best opportunity to be successful at the Triple A level,” he said over the phone.

Kris Schultz, president of the Medicine Hat Minor Hockey Association, is speaking to Hockey Alberta tonight at their meeting in Taber.
