Going to jail to help raise money for local animals

MEDICINE HAT, AB — There is no ‘get out of jail’ card available at this fundraiser.

Katch n’ Kennel is celebrating it’s third anniversary this year at the Home and Garden Trade Show.

Local people are putting themselves in “jail” and have to raise enough money to “bail” themselves out.

All donations made to free someone go towards the Medicine Hat SPCA.

This year 17 people participated in the annual event.

Each volunteer set individual goals, with the hope of acculminating $25,000.

On Sunday Executive Director of Medicine Hat SPCA, Katie Ayres, locked herself in all day with her foster puppies to raise $5,000.

Her trick was to only let passersby pet the puppies if they donated, whether it be five cents or fifty dollars.

The money goes towards the general up keep of the the facility as they run primarily on donations.

“We don’t receive a lot of money from the government, or anything like that, so we really rely on the support of our community to keep the shelter going,” said Ayres.

Medicine Hat SPCA cares for abandoned animals, where they walk, feed, provide medical support, and vaccinations for them.
