Southridge YMCA expansion officially opens

MEDICINE HAT, AB — After six months of construction, the Southridge YMCA officially opened its newest branch Thursday afternoon.

The front lobby of the building was packed to mark the opening of the 3,000 square-foot expansion to the fitness centre. The expansion, which has been under construction since June and has been operating since January, cost $1.2 million and features more fitness equipment and a larger space for people to work out in.

The event also paid tribute to Deb Kusler, whose name appears on the cardio centre in the facility. Kusler, who passed away in 2014, left a donation of $500,000 to the YMCA, which was used to help pay for the expansion.

“(Kusler was) a long-time member of the YMCA, and a person who was very much committed to the City of Medicine Hat, and the community here,” said Sharon Hayward, CEO of the YMCA in Medicine Hat. “She made a nice donation to us, and that allowed us to finish off this expansion.”

Hayward says the facility hopes to eventually add a pool in the future.
