Medicine Hat, AB — On what was a historic night, the Medicine Hat Tigers beat Brandon in shutout fashion 4-0.

For only the second time in Tigers history a jersey number was lifted to the rafters, never to be worn again. Tom Lysiak, one of the greatest to ever grace the ice for the Orange and Black, had his iconic #9 retired posthumously Saturday night in front of 4,489 fans.

“He accomplished so much and I’m just so proud,” said Lysiak’s daughter Jessica Lysiak-Braun following the ceremony. “That one particular picture (on the banner) I love of my dad, because it’s so mischievous just like he was.”

For Melinda Lysiak, Tom’s wife of 34 years, seeing his number raised to the rafters of the Canalta Centre is a moment she’ll never forget.

“He was a very special person,” she said. “It’s wonderful to see him so loved.”

Once the ceremony was done a hockey game broke out. David Quenneville opened up the scoring near the midway point of the opening period, collecting his first goal since coming back from injury.

Mason Shaw would double the Tigers lead with his 25th of the year 7 minutes later giving the home team a 2-0 lead after the first twenty.

Mark Rassell gave Medicine Hat some more breathing room 13:33 into the second. Rassell’s tally gave him 30 on the year, a milestone for the Calgary native.

Less than three minutes into the final period Gary Haden sealed the deal with a bar down snipe. And a four goal lead would be plenty for Michael Bullion on this evening. He wound up turning away 26 shots to record his second shutout since joining the Tigers. Which are also the only two shutouts of his WHL career.

The win improves the Tigers record to 44-18-1-0 for the year. They’re now off until March rolls around when they take on the Raiders in Prince Albert on the 1st.
