MEDICINE HAT, AB — Dozens of people lined up at the Medicine Hat Lodge today for the first of a two day job fair. The fair was being hosted by STEP Energy.

“We’re looking to fill 39 to 45 positions,” said hiring manager, Dean Fraser.

“They will all be based in Medicine Hat, so all our professionals must live within an hour of the Medicine Hat area.”

STEP Energy does not currently have an office in Medicine Hat but there are plans in work to change that. As the company looks to set up a shop locally, they’re in need of fracturing, maintenance and electronic professionals.

“Our positions are full time, they’re not seasonal, they’re not short term contract jobs, they’re permanent full time positions with full benefits,” stressed Fraser.

Many of those in line were men who have spent years working in the oil and gas sector, but have been laid off at some point over the past two years.

“A year and a half, I’ve been out a year and a half,” said Les Erickson. Like many though, Erickson said this fair has given him hope.

“Sounds encouraging,” he said after speaking with the company.

“The people are nice, they’re buying different companies, I like that.”

Mike Monvoison agreed this fair is a good sign things are starting to turn around.

“I got a good feeling,” he said. “I sat down with a supervisor and he gave me an idea what he wants, and if I wanted to drive until things pick up – and of course I said yes.”

Monvoison has been out of work since March and chose to go back to school for further certifications. He says now though his program is finishing and he’s eager for a job. He realizes though that he’s not the only one looking.

“A lot of the guys I worked with before are here,” he said. “We’ll take any opportunities we can find.”

The fair runs until 8 p.m. Wednesday and Fraser says those hired could start training as soon as Monday.

Hundreds are expected to apply, but with only 40 or so open positions, many will still be left without a job.

“I’m old enough to understand the way the economy is,” said Erickson. “It just takes time, and hopefully my turn comes again soon.
