MEDICINE HAT, AB —The Medicine Hat Police Service is focusing intersection and sidewalk safety for the month of January.

The Selected Traffic Enforcement Program says the highest number of intersection related collisions typically happen in January. Recent data indicated that 25 per cent of motor vehicle collisions deaths happened at intersections.

The main intersections in Medicine Hat with the highest rate of accidents are Dunmore Road at Trans- Canada Way, 13th Avenue at the Trans-Canada Highway and 13th Avenue at Southwood Drive.

Police say the top reasons why incidents occur are making a left turn across the path of another vehicle, stop sign violations and disobeying a traffic signal

Police are reminding drivers to approach intersections with caution and scan them, be prepared to yield, check for cross traffic and watch out for pedestrians.

For more information about sidewalk safety or if you have questions contact Sgt. Clarke White with the traffic unit at 403-529-8471.

Municipal Bylaw Enforcement will make snow removal and sidewalk safety a focus this month.

A bylaw requires the owner or occupant of any premises with an adjoining sidewalk to clear away any snow within 24 hours from the time it fell.

Only snow from the public sidewalk can be on the road. Snow from driveways, parking lots and other parts of the property must stay on the owners property.

Extension cords must be no less than eight above the sidewalk to ensure that they are not a hazard to pedestrians.

Failing to clear the snow from the public sidewalk, placing snow on the roadway or having an extension cord lay across the sidewalk could result in fines from $100 to $10,000.

To report bylaw violations or if you have questions contact Heather Trail, peace officer, at 403-529-8436.
