TABER, AB — A 39 year old Saskatchewan man is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder, in connection with a pair of assaults in Taber on Wednesday.

Taber Police Service responded to a serious assault in the backyard of a home along the 5000 block of 53 Street. On Friday, police updated the case, saying further investigation confirmed two victims may have been assaulted by the same suspect.

The first victim, a 26-year old woman, was allegedly hit with a garden shovel, choked and had her life threatened, but did not require any medical assistance.

A 25-year old male, also from Saskatchewan, tried to intervene in the first attack, and was struck in the head with a spade. Police say the man was allegedly hit multiple times as he lay unconscious on the ground.

The man was transported to the Taber Hospital, and later airlifted by STARS to Calgary’s Foothills Hospital, where he remains in intensive care. The man has already spoken with investigators.

Maurice Joseph Lavallee, from Timber Lake, Saskatchewan, has been remanded in custody on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault against the male victim, assault with a weapon and uttering threats. Police believe the suspect and victims know each other, and that the attack was not random.

Lavallee is set to appear in Taber Provincial Court on January 17, 2017.
