Medicine Hat Transit joins annual kindness campaign, with a focus on rider connections

Medicine Hat Transit is teaming up with the What Matters to Hatters Coalition for an annual campaign.

The fourth annual Kindness Campaign launches Nov. 13 in conjunction with World Kindness Day and runs until Feb. 20, 2027, coinciding with the end of Random Acts of Kindness Week.

This year’s campaign focuses on building stronger connections between transit drivers and riders through small gestures, including saying hello or goodbye.

Stickers and posters featuring the prompt “Who can say ‘hello’ first?” will be placed at bus shelters and on fixed-route and accessible transit buses.

What Matters to Hatters Coalition chair Taneil Zanidean said they are proud of the partnership, and the campaign aims to encourage meaningful interactions that strengthen community connections.

“By taking thoughtful steps each day to nurture our relationships and strengthen social connections, we can build healthier, happier, and more connected lives and communities,” Zanidean said in a statement.

The City’s manager of transit services, Cody Dzik, said that both drivers and passengers can become caught up in the demands of getting people to their destinations safely and on time.

“Understandably, riders may be focused on the day’s tasks and getting where they need to go quickly and safely. And for our drivers, with hundreds of passengers per day, the focus can be staying on time and transporting riders safely,” Dzik said in a statement.

“But, within the rush of boardings and travel, there’s an exciting opportunity to make a brief, kind interaction be the new norm – whether a hello, goodbye, or whatever kindness looks like to you,” he added.

“We’re thrilled to be a part of this campaign with What Matters to Hatters to inspire these interactions.”

The coalition says previous campaigns have focused on random acts of kindness and recognizing people who demonstrate kindness in the community.

Riders are encouraged to watch for campaign materials beginning Nov. 13 and continue practising small acts of kindness throughout the year.
