Medicine Hat police warn businesses about organized credit card fraud scheme

Nov 3, 2026 | 8:25 AM

Medicine Hat police are warning businesses to be on alert for an organized fraud scheme targeting retailers and suppliers across Canada.

The Medicine Hat Police Service says investigators have identified incidents in Alberta involving suspects allegedly using stolen credit card information to purchase high-value merchandise.

Similar incidents have also been reported in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

In a recent Medicine Hat investigation, suspects attempted to purchase more than $65,000 worth of electrical wire from a local business using multiple credit card numbers.

Employees became suspicious after several large transactions were processed and delivery locations were repeatedly changed.

Police say the incidents follow a consistent pattern. Suspects may place large orders over the phone, use multiple credit cards to complete purchases and arrange for a third-party courier or associate to collect the merchandise.

After an initial successful transaction, suspects may place additional orders for larger quantities or higher-value products.

The MHPS is encouraging businesses, particularly those selling high-value goods, to verify the identity of new customers and independently confirm billing and company information.

Police also recommend exercising caution when multiple credit cards are used for one purchase, closely reviewing requests to change delivery or pickup locations and verifying addresses, especially when merchandise is being sent to a storage facility, vacant property or location that does not appear connected to the purchaser.

Businesses are also encouraged to consider delaying the release of high-value merchandise until payment and customer information have been verified.

Police warn that businesses could face significant financial losses if a card issuer later determines charges were unauthorized and reverses the payment.

Anyone who has experienced a similar incident or has information about the scheme is asked to contact the Medicine Hat Police Service at 403-529-8481.
