Medicine Hat police investigate suspicious item found in Halloween candy

Nov 2, 2026 | 2:42 PM

Medicine Hat police are investigating after a suspicious item was found in a child’s Halloween candy collected in the Saamis area.

Police say a resident reported finding a partially deflated bag of chips around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, with what appeared to be a cut in one corner and part of an unidentified pill marked with the number 400 protruding from the opening.

No one consumed the item, and no illnesses have been reported.

The family had been trick-or-treating throughout the Saamis area and could not identify which home the chips came from.

Police have seized the bag and pill for examination. The pill has not been identified, and no other similar incidents have been reported.

The Medicine Hat Police Service is reminding parents and caregivers to inspect Halloween candy and other packaged food before it is eaten. Anyone who finds suspicious packaging or an unknown substance is asked not to consume it and to contact police.

Anyone who has eaten a suspicious item or feels unwell should call 911.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact MHPS at 403-529-8481.
