Two Quebec men are facing charges after Medicine Hat police say they recovered more than $63,000 worth of suspected stolen merchandise during a traffic stop on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Medicine Hat Police Service officers stopped an eastbound U-Haul cube van at about 2:50 a.m. on Oct. 22 for a traffic violation.

Police identified the occupants as Andre Fabbri, 27, and Jacob Morel-Arseneault, 23, both from Quebec.

An investigation uncovered a large quantity of suspected stolen merchandise, including power tools, electrical supplies and other commercial products. The recovered items have an estimated retail value of $63,470.

Police also recovered several Canadian government identification documents, Quebec driver’s licences and numerous Home Depot commercial account cards.

The investigation led to additional charges related to alleged counterfeit identification documents and fraudulently obtained credit cards.

Morel-Arseneault faces two counts of failing to comply with a probation order, possession of stolen property over $5,000, four counts of possession of counterfeit identification documents and five charges related to fraudulently obtained credit cards.

Fabbri faces charges of possession of stolen property over $5,000, six counts of possession of counterfeit identification documents and 12 charges related to fraudulently obtained credit cards.

Both men were held for judicial interim release hearings and subsequently released. They are scheduled to appear in Medicine Hat court on Nov. 25.

Police said the investigation is continuing.
