Medicine Hat defence forum and tradeshow to explore opportunities in SE Alberta

Oct 28, 2026 | 2:54 PM

Medicine Hat is hosting a defence industry tradeshow Wednesday and a forum Thursday to explore how growing defence spending and regional research investments could create opportunities for businesses and workers in southeastern Alberta.

The Defence Growth Tradeshow, running from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Medicine Hat Lodge, is bringing businesses together with industry organizations, government support agencies and technology developers.

On Thursday, the Defence Growth Forum will bring together industry leaders, researchers and government representatives to discuss defence procurement, aerospace innovation, manufacturing and workforce development.

The forum runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Medicine Hat Lodge, with ticket sales closed.

Organizers say more than $1 billion in local defence and research modernization projects are underway, while more than $500 billion in national defence investments are planned over the coming decade.

The forum will examine how southeastern Alberta can benefit from those investments, including through work at Canadian Forces Base Suffield and the Foremost Uncrewed Aerial Systems Test Range.

Sessions will cover the future of defence research, federal programs available to businesses, and the role of drone technology in the region’s economic development.

Speakers will also discuss preparing workers for future defence and aviation jobs, including pathways from high school into science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers.
