Brooks RCMP outline safety guidelines for hunting season in Alberta

Oct 26, 2026 | 4:37 PM

Brooks RCMP are reminding hunters to make safety and security a priority as hunting season continues across Alberta, sharing guidelines on firearm storage, visibility in the field and emergency preparedness.

In a release, police shared several safety guidelines aimed at protecting hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts sharing the province’s natural spaces.

A full list of recommendations includes:

  • Secure firearms: Keep firearms secured whether in transit or in the field. Ensure they are unloaded when not in use and during transportation. Store them in a locked case or secure them with a trigger lock.
  • Prevent theft: Never leave firearms unattended in vehicles or public places, even for short periods. Secure them to prevent theft or misuse.
  • Check equipment: Inspect hunting equipment before heading out to ensure it is in safe working order.
  • Stay visible: Wear bright or high-visibility clothing, ideally orange or another standout colour, and avoid high-traffic areas and clearly marked trails where other outdoor enthusiasts may be present.
  • Follow hunting rules: Ensure all required licences, tags and permits are in order, respect designated hunting zones and protected wildlife areas, and follow hunting season start and end dates set by local authorities.
  • Prepare for emergencies: Carry a first aid kit and a fully charged phone or other communication device, and always tell someone where you plan to hunt.
