Tigers looking to slow down Hitmen offence in divisional showdown

Oct 23, 2026 | 11:06 AM

Following a split last weekend against the Regina Pats and Brandon Wheat Kings, the Medicine Hat Tigers begin a home-and-home series with their divisional rival, the Calgary Hitmen.

The Tigers have won ten straight regular-season and playoff games against the Hitmen, dating back to a 4-2 loss in Calgary on October 10th of last season.

Despite the win streak, six of the ten straight Tiger wins have been decided by one goal, with four requiring overtime or a shootout.

Calgary has been led this season by standout rookie Carter Sanderson, who leads all WHL skaters with 13 goals through eight games, which paces out to 110 goals over 68 games.

Sanderson’s offence has been needed as draft-eligible netminder Eric Tu has not been himself to start the season.

Tu has posted a 3.75 GAA and a 0.876 SV% through four games to begin the season, a far cry from the 2.40 GAA and 0.918 SV% he posted during Calgary’s playoff run last year.

Tu’s game is sure to come along, but in the interim, the offence of Sanderson has been a necessity for a Calgary team that has been searching for consistency.

The Hitmen began the season 4-0-0-0 before losing four straight, but have since rebounded with back-to-back wins.

Meanwhile, the Medicine Hat Tigers will look to continue their momentum from Saturday’s 8-1 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings, which saw their offence jump back to life following consecutive 6-1 defeats.

Their powerplay also found its mojo in the win, capitalizing on their lone opportunity of the game, snapping an 0/18 spell on the man advantage.

Carter Casey appeared in eight of 12 games against Calgary last season for the Tabbies and was excellent, going 8-0-0-0 while boasting a 2.05 GAA and a 0.927 SV%.

If he goes tonight, Casey will have his hands full trying to slow down a dynamic Calgary offence as the Tigers aim to take the front half of the home and home with Calgary.

Puck drop from the Scotiabank Saddledome is set for 7:00 p.m. MST, with the pre-game show beginning at 6:45 on WILD 94.5 FM.
