Canada’s Sarah Mitton places second in Diamond League shot put final

BRUSSELS — Canadian Sarah Mitton finished second in the women’s shot put at the Diamond League Final on Friday.

The 30-year-old from Brooklyn, N.S., threw 20.64 metres on her first attempt and surpassed 20 metres on three other attempts.

“I went out there, and I gave it everything I had tonight. And how can you be upset with a performance like that? I had a lot of really great throws, a lot of throws over 20,” Mitton said. “I wish I could have come out with the trophy. That’s what we come for. But yeah, I’m super happy. A great way to end the season.”

American Chase Jackson won with 21.14 metres, setting an American, Diamond League and meet record along with a world-leading mark.

World champion Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands, who finished third Friday at 20.57 metres, had held the previous world lead after throwing 21.09 metres in May.

“How can you be upset to lose to one of the best throws since 2013?” Mitton said. “We had two girls go over 21 in the last, I guess it’s been four months. Shot’s really on the rise, and I think, you know, we get those two over 21, I believe I can throw 21 metres.”

Mitton won the Diamond League title in 2024. She is also a two-time world indoor champion and won silver at the 2023 world championships.

On the track, Marco Arop, the 2023 world champion and 2024 Olympic silver medallist from Edmonton, finished fourth in the men’s 800 metres in 1:43.50, with Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi winning in a meet-record 1:41.80.

Audrey Leduc, of Gatineau, Que., finished sixth in the women’s 200 metres in 22.95 seconds.

Andre De Grasse, of Markham, Ont., had qualified for Saturday’s men’s 200 metres but withdrew due to a personal commitment.
