Medicine Hat Mavericks host Red Sox on Tuesday, drop 7-2 contest to Miller Express on Monday

On Monday night, the Mavs suffered a 7-2 defeat to the East Division-leading Moose Jaw Miller Express. A win that also gave the Miller Express the best record in the WCBL at 30-11.

The Mavericks did take an early lead in the contest when Evan Morrison scored on a wild pitch in the first inning.

In the fourth inning, the Miller Express would get four runs off Mavs starter Jackson Miles. Garryn Plummer would hit a one-out double, and then scored when Jacob Mraz reached on a fielding error to tie the game at one.

With the bases loaded later in the inning, Mraz would score on a Jimmy Kurtz single to give Moose Jaw the lead.

Michael Rago, who had walked earlier in the inning, would also score.

As would Kurtz, who was driven in by a Thomas Soto single.

With Jax Graham now on the mound for the Mavs in the seventh inning, the Miller Express would get two more runs during a three-hit inning to make it 6-1.

That lead would extend to 7-1 in the eighth for Moose Jaw with Michael Rago scoring off a triple from Kurtz.

Aidan Johnson’s night on the mound came to an end after giving up a single run through seven innings, and RJ Patrick took to the mound for the Miller Express in the eighth.

A leadoff double from Morrison would eventually lead to him scoring later in the inning on a Nick Hill sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 7-2.

That would be the final run in the game as the ninth went scoreless.

Johnson earned the win for the Miller Express, while Miles was tagged with the loss for the Mavericks.

The Miller Express outhit the Mavs 11-6 in the contest, and five errors in the game by the Mavericks factored into the loss.

The regular season finale for the Mavericks is just over two weeks away on Aug. 5, with 14 games remaining before the playoffs start on Aug. 7.

To qualify for the post-season, the Mavs will need to remain in a top-four spot in the six-team East Division.
