Medicine Hat extends nomination deadline for inaugural Arts and Culture Legacy Award

Jul 17, 2026 | 12:35 PM

The City of Medicine Hat is extending the deadline for the new Arts and Culture Legacy Award to give residents more time to nominate individuals, with a three-week extension to encourage more submissions during the award’s inaugural year.

Created in 2026, the Arts and Culture Legacy Award recognizes individuals who have helped shape the city’s arts and cultural community through their contributions and achievements.

The award honours artists who have made outstanding contributions to the community or earned significant recognition beyond Medicine Hat, as well as “culture builders” who have supported the community through leadership, advocacy, teaching, mentorship or patronage.

The nomination deadline has been extended to Aug. 7, giving residents an additional three weeks to submit nomination packages.

Aaron Nelson, acting community development director, said in a news release that the extension responds to public interest and gives residents more time to submit nominations during the award’s inaugural year.

From 2027 onward, nominations for the annual award will close on July 15.

Up to five people may be inducted each year, although both award categories may not be represented annually.

Recipients will be honoured during an annual induction ceremony, with the first scheduled for January 2027.

Inductees will also be recognized in the Arts and Culture Legacy Gallery at the Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre.

The city said nomination forms, eligibility requirements and additional information are available through the Arts and Culture Legacy Award webpage.
