Firefighters respond to fire in southwest Medicine Hat on Tuesday

A resident escaped safely during a house fire in southwest Medicine Hat on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded to the structure fire at about 1:23 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, they found black smoke coming from the kitchen and living area of the home. They quickly brought the fire under control. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Fire officials said working smoke alarms alerted the resident to the fire, allowing them to evacuate safely before crews arrived.
