Medicine Hat Mavericks win third straight against Beavers in Weyburn Tuesday, host Miller Express Wednesday

The Medicine Hat Mavericks swept a three-game set against the Beavers last night in Weyburn.

 A 12-5 win improves the Mavs’ record to 15-17 on the season.

They now sit five and a half games back of the Moose Jaw Miller Express for second place in the Western Canadian Baseball League East Division standings. The same opponent the Mavs host Wednesday at Athletic Park, with the first pitch at 6:45 p.m.

On Tuesday, the Beavers struck first with three runs in the bottom of the second. A Colt Sussex-Uphold double drove in a pair, and then a Mavs error brought in another run.

The Mavs offence responded in the top of the third inning with three runs to tie the game. Adam Vulcano reached on a single, Evan Morrison on a walk; both would come in to score on a Blake Dale double. Dale would then cross the plate on a Frankie Giacalone single.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Beavers regained the lead with a pair of runs when Ryan Dauphinee drove in a pair of runs with a double.

The 5-3 Beavers lead held until the top of the seventh inning, when the Mavs’ offence exploded for six runs.

The inning started with Adam Vulcano being hit by a pitch, Josh Stark then reached on a throwing error. Morrison would then hit a three-run home run to give the Mavs a 6-5 lead.

Two batters later, Giacalone would hit a solo home run to extend the lead to 7-5.

After a Carter Roth walk and a Johnny Vulcano single, a couple of batters later, Jamel Chabot would walk to load the bases.

Adam Vulcano would come to the plate for the second time in the inning and drive in both Roth and his brother Johnny to make it 9-5 Mavs.

Medicine Hat added another two runs in the eighth inning. Roth hit a single with the bases loaded to drive in Morrison, who had walked to lead off the inning. Then Dale would score when Eric Calder hit into a double play.

Already up 11-5, the Mavs would add another in the top of the ninth inning. Stark came home on a single from Dale after he had hit a two-out single himself.

In the bottom of the ninth, Davin Hinote ran into some trouble and had the bases loaded before getting the Beavers to hit into a ground out to end the game.

Jackson Miles started on the mound for the Mavs, giving up four runs in four innings. He was replaced in the fifth inning by Jax Graham, who pitched two scoreless innings to get the win. JJ Harnett pitched a scoreless seventh before Hinote pitched two scoreless innings to close it out.

Josh Pritchard took the loss for the Beavers, giving up five runs through 3.2 innings after coming in for Luke Popplewell in the third inning.
