Medicine Hat Mavericks win two straight over Beavers, play again in Weyburn on Tuesday

Jul 7, 2026 | 8:44 AM

The Medicine Hat Mavericks defeated the Weyburn Beavers for the second straight game on Monday.

A 3-2 extra-inning win in Weyburn extends the Mavs’ lead over the Beavers for third place in the Western Canadian Baseball League’s East Division standings.

Medicine Hat now sits a game and a half up on Weyburn, after being a game and a half behind before the last two wins.

On Saturday, the Mavs came away with a 7-5 win over the Beavers at Athletic Park.

The teams play again on Tuesday in Weyburn at 7:05 p.m.

Monday’s low-scoring contest was tied at one heading into the extra inning.

The Mavs started the scoring in the top of the second inning when Adam Vulcano hit a single to drive Eric Calder home. Calder had reached with a double two batters earlier.

The Beavers didn’t strike back until the bottom of the sixth inning, when a Brayden Mayencourt single scored Joe Madill, who had walked earlier in the inning.

League rules have a runner start on second base at the beginning of an extra inning. Luke Gigliotti took that position at the top of the 10th.

He would score on a double from Josh Stark to give the Mavs a 2-1 lead.

That lead would extend to 3-1 as Stark advanced with future batters at the plate, eventually scoring on a wild pitch.

The Beavers were able to get their runner on second home in the 10th inning, but that is as close as they would get in the 3-2 loss.

Levi Tibbits earned the win for the Mavs, pitching the final two innings and giving up one run while striking out five. Cody Myers put in six innings to start the game and gave up one run. Derek Archer threw a pair of scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth.

The Beavers had Zach Raichel pitch nine innings with only a single run given up, before Gunner Ferguson entered in the extra inning, and gave up the two game-winning runs to the Mavs.

Stark had the hot bat for the Mavs, going three for four at the plate.

After Tuesday’s game in Weyburn, the Mavs return to Athletic Park on Wednesday to host the Moose Jaw Miller Express.

It starts a six-game homestand for the Mavs.

A stretch of games that also includes a pair of games next Tuesday. It starts when the Mavs host the Sylvan Lake Gulls at 1 p.m. to make up the postponed game from June 28. That contest is followed by a 6:45 p.m. contest against the Weyburn Beavers.
