Independent review to begin Thursday into the drowning death of a child at Echo Dale Regional Park

City officials say the review is part of their commitment to understanding the circumstances surrounding the incident and to ensuring the continued safety of all aquatic programs and facilities.

City officials add that the scope of the investigation will include a documentation review, a site inspection, and interviews with select personnel as required on Thursday and Friday.

A final report is expected within 60 days.

The Lifesaving Society establishes the aquatic safety standards and consults on aquatic safety issues for the aquatic industry, governments, and the judiciary.

They offer a suite of services to help aquatic facility operators maintain and improve safe pool and waterfront operations.

They perform aquatic safety audits and serve as experts in legal cases involving aquatic safety.

“Our focus remains on supporting those impacted and ensuring the highest standards of safety,” Interim City Manager Joe Hutter said in a statement from the City.

“Engaging the Lifesaving Society of Alberta and N.W.T. Branch is an important step in helping us assess our practices and determine if any changes are needed.”

The City has extended its condolences to the child’s family and is asking the public to respect the family’s privacy.

It says counselling and other supports continue to be available for employees and others affected by the incident.

The City says any recommendations resulting from the review will be made public once the final report is complete.
