Environment Canada warns of possible funnel cloud development in the Medicine Hat area
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement in effect for the city of Medicine Hat as conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds in the afternoon and evening on Wednesday.
Funnel clouds in these conditions are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms and normally pose no danger near the ground, according to Environment Canada.
However, the agency noted the rotation could intensify into a weak landspout tornado, and if conditions become more favourable, Environment Canada will issue watches or warnings.
Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage but can be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances.
