Canadian tennis star Mboko to miss Wimbledon with injured MCL in left knee

Canadian tennis star Victoria Mboko says she will miss the rest of the grass-court season, including Wimbledon, with a knee injury.

Mboko posted on Instagram on Friday that she injured the medial collateral ligament in her left knee when she slipped and fell during a match at the HSBC Championships.

The 19-year-old from Burlington, Ont., did not detail the severity of the injury, but said she is focused on a return to action “as soon as possible.”

She expressed disappointment in missing Wimbledon, saying the grass-court Grand Slam in London “a tournament I had been so looking forward to playing this year.” She advanced to the second round in her Wimbledon debut last year after advancing to the main draw as a lucky loser.

Mboko, ranked ninth on the WTA Tour, retired from her Round of 16 match against Karolina Pliskova on Wednesday at the Queen’s Club when she fell at the baseline trying to break serve in the second set. She was trailing 6-2, 3-4 at the time.

Her injury came a day after she teamed with tennis legend Serena Williams in a doubles victory over Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez. The 44-year-old Williams was making her anticipated return to action after almost four years away from the game.

“Thank you to Serena Williams for giving me this incredible opportunity to play alongside you,” Mboko said in the post.

“I learned so much from you and am so sorry our tournament came to an end prematurely, but I hope we can play together again and finish what we started.”
