Two Medicine Hat residents are facing multiple charges after police investigating an alleged dine-and-dash at a local restaurant seized a loaded firearm from a backpack.

Members of the Medicine Hat Police Service responded shortly before midnight on June 7 to a report of a theft in progress at a restaurant in the 2500 block of Box Springs Boulevard N.W.

Two individuals had allegedly left without paying for their meal.

Police would arrive shortly after and locate one adult female inside the business attempting to address the outstanding bill.

A second individual, a male, was located shortly after inside the restaurant and was taken into custody without incident.

During the arrest, police recovered a backpack belonging to the man. A search conducted in connection with the arrest, police say, uncovered a loaded, modified .22-calibre rifle and ammunition concealed inside a carrying case within the backpack.

Police say that further investigation determined that both individuals were subject to court-ordered conditions they were in breach of at the time of the incident.

Police further allege that one of the accused possessed identification belonging to another person.

As a result of the investigation, police have charged 26-year-old Jade Holt with four counts of failure to comply with a release order, food fraud and possession of identity documents.

Also charged is 22-year-old Connor Brace, with three counts of breach of probation order, possession of a prohibited/restricted firearm contrary to a court order, carrying a concealed weapon, careless storage of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a firearm, food fraud, possession of a restricted firearm without a licence, and possession of a loaded prohibited/restricted firearm.

Both accused were held for judicial interim release hearings and remanded into custody pending appearances in Medicine Hat provincial court on June 9.
