REGULAR MEETING

Medicine Hat Police Commission receives updates on budget and service reports

May 20, 2026 | 8:10 PM

The Medicine Hat Police Commission held a regular meeting on Wednesday and heard that the city’s police service is projecting a budget shortfall, while officials also highlighted recent arrests and the growing use of drones in policing operations.

Police Chief Alan Murphy said the service is currently projecting a negative budget variance, with the “benefit rate” identified as the main factor.

Murphy told commissioners the service is managing costs in areas within its control and will continue providing monthly updates.

Inspector Jason Graham presented two service reports on an April 7 incident in which a stolen truck crashed after police attempted a traffic stop near the Trans-Canada Highway.

Police said the truck lost control after exiting onto 13th Avenue and struck a traffic light pole.

Several occupants fled on foot, and four youths were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

A 17-year-old male was later arrested and charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, possession of stolen property over $5,000, breach of probation, driving without a licence, driving without insurance and failing to remain at the scene of a collision.

Commissioners also heard about two recent drone deployments. In one incident, police used a drone to help locate a suicidal man believed to be armed with a sword near the River Coulee area.

In another, the drone unit assisted officers and the canine unit in locating a woman who fled following alleged assault-related offences.

Police said the drones improve situational awareness and officer safety during high-risk incidents.

The commission also received an update on the downtown patrol unit, which has resumed bicycle patrols for the season.

Chief Murphy said the unit has been a great resource and expressed appreciation to the city for supporting the program.

The final item in the meeting was the appointment of Commissioner Onyinye Chukwunyerenwa as the commission’s representative to the Alberta Association of Police Governance.

The commission’s next public meeting is scheduled for June 17.
