The federal and Alberta governments are investing more than $323 million toward affordable housing projects across the province, including a new accessible housing development in Medicine Hat.

The funding, announced on Wednesday through Alberta’s Affordable Housing Partnership Program, will support the construction of more than 3,600 housing units and more than 70 shelter spaces across 41 projects in Alberta.

Among the approved projects is just under $521,000 for the Clients Ongoing Rehabilitation and Equality (CORE) Association, to build a sensory-friendly home in Medicine Hat.

CORE is a non-profit organization that provides housing, support services and community programs for people with developmental disabilities and acquired brain injuries.

The governments said the projects include a mix of affordable housing types, including multi-family developments, office-to-residential conversions, seniors housing, emergency shelters, transitional housing and supportive living.

Federal officials said the investment is part of broader efforts under the National Housing Strategy aimed at increasing the supply of affordable housing and reducing homelessness across Canada.

The announcement was made by Federal Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience Eleanor Olszewski and Alberta Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services Jason Nixon.

Nixon said affordable housing is essential to building strong communities.

Olszewski said Alberta’s rapid population growth is increasing pressure on housing supply, and the funding will help accelerate construction.

The province said the successful projects were selected through a competitive process that evaluated community need, project readiness and long-term affordability commitments of at least 20 years.

The announcement includes projects in Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Red Deer, Grande Prairie, Canmore and several smaller communities throughout Alberta.

According to the province, more than $720 million has now been committed through Alberta’s Affordable Housing Partnership Program since it was launched in 2022.

The federal government said the National Housing Strategy has committed more than $76 billion nationally toward the creation and repair of affordable housing units as of December 2025.
