Mustard Seed is recognizing volunteers during National Volunteer Week in Medicine Hat

Apr 16, 2026 | 6:27 PM

The Mustard Seed is marking National Volunteer Week and International Volunteer Month by recognizing the contributions of volunteers in Medicine Hat and across Western Canada.

The non-profit, which supports people experiencing poverty and homelessness, says volunteers remain central to its operations in communities, assisting with meals, outreach and wellness programming.

Across its Western Canada locations, more than 5,200 volunteers contributed over 97,000 hours of service in 2025, supporting programs ranging from shelter services to community outreach.

To mark the week, the organization will launch its first Community Impact Awards, recognizing four volunteers from different cities for their exceptional commitment, compassion and service in their communities.

Volunteer appreciation events will also be held in each city, bringing together staff and volunteers to recognize their contributions and strengthen community connections.

Throughout the month, volunteers and award recipients will also be featured across The Mustard Seed’s social media platforms, highlighting the breadth and impact of their work.

The Mustard Seed has operated in Medicine Hat alongside other centres in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan since its founding in 1984, providing support to people facing homelessness and poverty.

Sr. Director Community Engagement & Volunteer Services, David Conrad, said volunteers are essential to advancing the organization’s mission, using their compassion, generosity and willingness to serve to create meaningful connections and provide care for those they support every day.

The organization is encouraging those in Medicine Hat interested in volunteering to explore current opportunities through The Mustard Seeds website.
