City of Medicine Hat set to host week of events for National Volunteer Week

Apr 15, 2026 | 2:57 PM

The City of Medicine Hat is marking National Volunteer Week with a series of appreciation events aimed at celebrating and strengthening volunteerism in the city.

Taking place from April 19 to 25, the week carries the 2026 theme Ignite Volunteerism, encouraging residents to renew their commitment to volunteering and community connection.

Working with Volunteer Alberta and supported by funding from the Government of Alberta, the city has organized a lineup of activities to recognize current volunteers and encourage new ones to get involved.

Three Volunteer Café Chats will take place, including April 19 from 1 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Poolhouse Café & Roastery, April 20 from 1 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Station Coffee Co., and April 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Nosh.

Two additional sessions are scheduled for April 22, running from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Zucchini Blossom Market & Café and from 1 a.m. to 3 p.m. at MT Nest Cafe & Market.

A Volunteer Appreciation Rally will follow on April 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Medicine Hat City Hall, with the week wrapping up on April 24 with a free screening of Pay It Forward at The Monarch Theatre.

Doors open at 6 p.m., and the film begins at 7 p.m.

Community Resource Worker Anabell Marroquin said the week builds on momentum from a recent local learning series focused on improving volunteer recruitment, retention and inclusion.

Participants are encouraged to wear volunteer gear or bring a badge to receive a complimentary treat or discount during business hours.

The Volunteer Appreciation Rally will serve as the centrepiece event, bringing residents together downtown to recognize the impact of volunteers and highlight opportunities with local organizations.

The informal gatherings are meant to give volunteers a space to connect, share their experiences and provide input on the future of volunteerism in Medicine Hat.
