Medicine Hat College is receiving a $60,000 grant to coordinate the first provincial Indigenous Learner Summit (ILS) next spring, having been selected for its strong leadership and collaboration by Alberta Advanced Education.

The summit aims to bring together the post-secondary system in support of Indigenous adult learners throughout the province.

With support from the grant, the college has invested in activities that support reconciliation and Indigenization on campus, which led to the opportunity to coordinate and present at the ILS.

Nicholas Langat, MHC’s director of student supports, said the college takes pride in being recognized and hosting the event, viewing it as an opportunity to learn from others, adopt best practices and strengthen services and relationships with students, institutions and attendees.

The college is planning to collaborate with institutions across southern Alberta and the government to coordinate the ILS, which will bring together professionals from across the province to support system-wide dialogue, coordination, and knowledge sharing to benefit Indigenous learners.

Led by the college’s Indigenous Engagement and Student Supports office, priority has been placed on initiatives that bring the community together, promote reconciliation and help learners connect with Indigenous culture.

These efforts include craft circles, ceremonies with the college’s Elder on Campus and educational events held on campus.

The college also continues to host annual institutional events, including National Day for Truth & Reconciliation, Round Dance, and National Day of Awareness for Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People.

Langat said the goal is to include all institutions with similar Indigenous engagement and student support offices, with plans to potentially expand the provincial event to include participants from across Western Canada.
