City of Medicine Hat launches downtown safety grant to support businesses and improve security
The City of Medicine Hat is launching the Downtown Enhancement and Safety Grant aimed at helping downtown businesses and property owners enhance safety and create a more welcoming city centre.
The grant provides funding for practical upgrades, such as improved lighting and security systems, in response to feedback from the local business community, to strengthen the downtown core with an emphasis on safety, accessibility and inclusivity for residents, workers and visitors.
Backed by a $70,000 allocation for 2026, the program offers a 50 percent matching grant, with contributions ranging from $250 to a maximum of $5,000 for eligible, pre-approved permanent property improvements focused on crime prevention and security.
Officials said the initiative is intended to help address day-to-day operational challenges faced by businesses while also contributing to a safer and more positive environment for customers, employees and the broader community.
