Man leading Alberta’s separatist movement claims to have received death threat

Feb 26, 2026 | 9:50 AM

An Alberta man driving a separatist movement in the province says a live bullet was brought to his business as a death threat.

R-C-M-P say they received a report in late January about a man bringing an item resembling a bullet to a business in Bonnyville, about 240 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.

Police say they believe the item was a pen that resembled a bullet and there is no threat to public safety.

Mitch Sylvestre says he believes R-C-M-P know it was a live bullet but don’t want to manage the work associated with an indictment.

He added that the incident terrified staff at the store.

Sylvestre is the C-E-O of a separatist group called the Alberta Prosperity Project.

He is also the proponent behind the petition seeking a referendum on provincial secession.
