Early Wednesday morning, work started on the historic Monarch Theatre’s roof restoration project.

A social media post from the theatre’s page stated that the rooftop furnace was being temporarily removed to allow roof restoration work to move ahead.

Redcliff-based Niwa Crane Ltd. supplied the crane service, and Medicine Hat’s Plato Superior Roofing is expected to begin work on the roof soon.

The group stated that the roof restoration project will help protect the building structure, safeguard its interior, and ensure the theatre remains operational for future generations.

The Monarch Theatre in downtown Medicine Hat was built in 1911 and holds the title of Canada’s oldest purpose-built movie theatre. It was honoured as a Municipal Historic Resource in 2016.
