Family Medicine Maternity Clinic set to reopen at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital

Jan 29, 2026 | 6:45 PM

An announcement took place at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Thursday, stating the Family Medicine Maternity Clinic will reopen next month, restoring access to comprehensive prenatal care for local families in the city.

Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA and Parliamentary Secretary of Rural Health Justin Wright, along with Dr. Gerry Prince, family obstetrician and clinic lead, made the announcement.

During the speech, Wright said, “This clinic will provide an urgent solution to support prenatal and obstetrical care in our community.”

The reopening follows warnings from local health-care leaders that a planned physician departure in April would have limited access to maternity care and left some expectant mothers without prenatal services in the spring of 2026.

Through a collaborative effort involving Alberta Health Services, Primary Care Alberta, local physicians and the Palliser Primary Care Network, the clinic began accepting referrals on Jan. 19.

The clinic’s interdisciplinary team of physicians and nurses will provide routine prenatal assessments and screening, pregnancy and postpartum education and counselling, and coordination of lab testing and diagnostic imaging.

Medicine Hat sees just under 1,000 births each year, with family physicians, obstetricians and midwives sharing prenatal and delivery care.

Expecting families may be referred by a health-care provider or may self-refer by calling the patient appointment line at 403-529-8060.

The clinic is intended for expecting families who are currently pregnant, have no significant medical comorbidities or identified obstetrical complications, and require a prenatal care provider or delivering physician.
