CHRISTMAS DINNER

Medicine Hat Kiwanis hosting Christmas dinner, applications due Friday

Dec 11, 2025 | 9:47 AM

Medicine Hat’s local Kiwanis clubs are hosting a Christmas dinner for those in the Medicine Hat area who don’t have family or friends to spend the holiday with.

Doors open at the Veiner Centre on Dec. 25 at 11 a.m., and dinner is served at noon.

Application forms for the turkey dinner can be obtained at the Veiner Centre, participating churches and the office of Wm. H.L. desBarres in the Co-op Mall on 13th Avenue.

Applications are due Friday, Dec. 12, at noon, so organizers know how much food is required.

Bill desBarres, an organizer of the event, said they are expecting a couple hundred people on Christmas Day for the dinner that started back in 1980.

“We became aware, and we’re aware that there was a number of people that, because of their age and or loss of their partner, were unable to share Christmas with other people, so we thought Christmas Day was a good day to put on a turkey dinner, and we’ve done it for all those years,” desBarres said.

“We did it at a number of different venues over the years, and we’re very pleased to be able to use the Veiner Center this year. We have 30-some volunteers who prepare the venue and the meal and serve it.”

Individuals who need a ride to the dinner can note that on their application, as there will be volunteer drivers to get people to the event.

This is a project of the Kiwanis Club of Medicine Hat, the Gas City Kiwanis Club and the Golden K Kiwanis Club.

The groups are also looking for volunteers for the event.

Individuals 14 years of age and older interested can reach out to Derrick Ironside at derrick.ironside@gmail.com or 403-548-5664.

The event is sponsored by South Country Co-op and the Medicine Hat Lodge.
