Brooks RCMP urges residents to protect their holiday deliveries from porch pirates

With the holiday season in full swing, many households are receiving a higher volume of online orders and parcel deliveries.

Mounties said that, unfortunately, this time of year also sees an increase in package thefts, commonly known as “porch piracy.”

The Brooks RCMP have offered some tips to reduce the risk of stolen deliveries, to help residents keep their gifts and online purchases secure.

Track your packages closely and sign up for delivery alerts so you know exactly when your items are expected to arrive.
Bring deliveries inside as quickly as you can. If you’re not home, have parcels delivered to a trusted neighbour, friend, or family member.
Many couriers offer delivery to pickup lockers, post offices, or alternate secure locations. Ask the delivery company to place packages in less visible areas, such as behind a planter or side entrance.
Install a doorbell or security cameras. Visible surveillance, especially motion-activated systems, can deter would-be thieves and help identify suspects if a theft occurs.
Consider a lockable parcel box. Weather-proof, tamper-resistant parcel boxes placed near entryways can provide an additional layer of protection.
Avoid leaving empty packaging outside for extended periods of time. Visible boxes for electronics or high-value items can signal that new purchases are inside the home.
Be on the lookout for suspicious activity. Report unfamiliar vehicles repeatedly circling the neighbourhood or individuals following delivery trucks.
