MEDICINE HAT, AB — A man charged with second degree murder in connection with a homicide on New Year’s Eve 2016 will go to trial this spring.

Leonard Beaulieu’s trial is scheduled to begin in the Medicine Hat Court of Queen’s Bench on May 6. According to the court, Beaulieu will be tried by judge and jury, and the trial is scheduled to last 12 days.

He was originally scheduled to be tried earlier this month.

Beaulieu was charged in February 2017 following the death of Jordan Pede of Medicine Hat.

Medicine Hat Police reported Pede, 24, was found injured in Strathcona Island Park on New Year’s Eve. He died in a Calgary hospital 11 days later.

A second man charged in connection the death of Pede, Luke Boxell, pleaded guilty to a charge of manslaughter last year in Medicine Hat Court of Queen’s Bench, and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

A publication ban on details presented about the case during a preliminary hearing is in effect.
