Alberta added 13K part-time jobs in October, full-time falls

It may just be part of the holiday shopping season, but Alberta had an influx of part-time work this past month.

Statistics Canada reports that there was a net increase of 10,300 people who were employed in the province in October 2025 compared to September.

The number of people who had part-time jobs grew by 13,300, while those in full-time positions declined by 2,900.

Gains in employment were seen in sectors such as wholesale and retail trade (+12,700), information, culture and recreation (+6,700), and public administration (+4,300).

Other industries saw employment fall, including educational services (-11,600), healthcare and social assistance (-6,600), and finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing (-3,000).

Alberta’s unemployment rate stayed the same at 7.8 per cent, while the national rate improved by 0.2 per cent to 6.9 per cent.

Regional unemployment rates were as follows:

  • Lethbridge-Medicine Hat: 8.6% (down 0.2%)
  • Edmonton: 8.2% (down 0.7%)
  • Calgary: 7.6% (down 0.4%)
  • Red Deer: 7.4% (up 0.4%)
  • Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake: 6.8% (down 0.4%)
  • Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House and Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River: 6% (up 0.4%)
  • Camrose-Drumheller: 5.5% (down 0.1%)
