Award winning hotel group expanding in Medicine Hat

Nov 1, 2025 | 10:30 AM

A brand-new hotel in Medicine Hat’s southeast is set to be built adjacent to the award-winning Best Western Premier and Executive Residency.

Sun City Hotels Ltd. is behind the new development next to its current property in Southlands.

The future extended stay hotel will feature about 100 all-suite units, modern aquatic and wellness amenities, and versatile meeting spaces.

Construction is expected to begin in the second half of 2026, with the hotel opening anticipated by late 2028 or early 2029.

“This expansion reflects our strong belief in Medicine Hat’s growth and future as both a business and leisure destination,” General Manager of Sun City Hotels Ltd., Kell Sloan, said in a statement.

“Our new extended stay facility will create meaningful employment opportunities, with 45-50 permanent new hotel jobs, in addition to construction employment during the build phase,” he added.

“It also demonstrates our ongoing commitment to environmental excellence as we design the hotel to exceed Green Key 4 Keys sustainability standards, embedding high-efficiency energy and water fixtures as part of our responsibility to future generations.”

The all-suite hotel will primarily cater to business and extended-stay travellers.

Each unit will be equipped with a full kitchen to offer guests a home-away-from-home experience for longer stays.

The development is also set to feature a modern aquatic and wellness area with an indoor pool, waterslide, hot tub, steam room, exercise room, and outdoor seating area, as well as expanded meeting and conference spaces.

The group said that the announcement comes at a time of record growth for the Alberta tourism sector, with regional hotel occupancy at 68 per cent and sector revenues climbing rapidly.

The existing Best Western Premier Executive Residency was a recent recipient of the 2025 M.K. Guertin Award, Best Western’s highest honour.

“Medicine Hat continues to demonstrate strong fundamentals for hospitality investment,” Sloan said.

“Our existing property’s success – including recognition as the city’s highest-rated hotel and recent M.K. Guertin Award – validates our commitment to this market,” he added.

“This expansion will create new employment opportunities during construction and provide permanent positions upon completion, while significantly enhancing the city’s capacity to host larger conferences, events, and extended stay guests.”
