What Matters to Hatters Coalition hosting film festival to raise awareness for isolation

The What Matters to Hatters coalition is hosting the Unlonely Film Fest and Community Mingle project at the Monarch Theatre.

The project is raising awareness for isolation, reducing the stigma around it, and fostering a greater sense of belonging in Medicine Hat.

The community mingle will include an overview of the initiative’s goals and how it aligns with fostering a healthier, more connected community, with an equity lens also being publicly launched and shared at this event.

Local efforts to address social isolation and loneliness will also be showcased, along with local opportunities for people to come together and connect.

Michelle Sauve, a member of the What Matters to Hatters coalition, said the films talk about different segments of society’s experience with isolation and loneliness.

“These are common human experiences that I think Hatters will relate to in some shape or form,” Sauve said.

Sauve said the film fest is only half of the project.

“The second half is to launch publicly a committee called Medicine Hat Healthy Communities, that’s actually been in existence for over a year,” Sauve said.

“Community leaders from parks and recreation, community development, Ever Active Schools, and Medicine Hat Food Connections have all been working to create a healthier community from an equity lens.”

More information will be announced after the community mingle.

Five short films will be shown starting at 2 p.m. on Nov. 8, and the first 100 guests to arrive will receive a $5 concession coupon.
